After recent integration of UID (Unique Identification Number) into its ecosystem, users can now pay through BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) using Aadhaar number. Post opening up the app, navigate to ‘Send’ option > tap the three dot menu > choose AADHAAR PAY as payment option. After this, enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number, fill in the amount you want to send and hit Send. As of now, 14 banks have been brought on board for the Aadhaar based payments with the list to extend over time.
Apart from this, the newly launched UPI-based app will also soon include biometric-based payments connected to their respective Aadhaar numbers. Payments through Biometrics will be a big step towards digital payments as one would then require to just enter the biometrics to make payments. Other than this, users can also opt to pay through Mobile Number, Account + IFSC and Payment Address.
As per a recent report ( as mentioned by The Indian Express), about 111 crore people in India already posses an Aadhaar card and about 390 million bank accounts have been linked with the respective Aadhaar card numbers.
If you are not aware, BHIM (Bharat Interface For Money) is a simplified payment platform to facilitate UPI (Unified Payment Interface) and USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) payment methods. As of now, the app is only available on Google Play Store and works in English or Hindi language. Being a Central Government initiative, most of the Indian commercial banks are already on board for this payment system including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Punjab National Bank, among others.
Recently, after crossing the 10 million app downloads milestone on PlayStore, BHIM app was under scrutiny when several users started facing various issues regarding the device. While some users were disappointed by the app’s operation with 2G networks, some users complained about no option to verify details while sending money through Aadhaar number or Bank account details.
