Introduction
Obi Mobiles, which was founded by former Apple chief executive officer John Sculley and entered the Indian market in April last year, had announced the Alligator S454 last October. The Obi Alligator offers 1.3 GHz quad core processor, Android KitKat operating system, 4.5 inch HD display, 8 GB internal storage, 1 GB RAM, 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. This 8.2 mm thick handset has a 1600 mAh battery and offers two SIM slots. It has a 32 GB micro SD card slot as well.
Here is everything you would want to know about the Alligator which is available for the best price of Rs 6,450.
Design and Display
As one would expect from a 4.5 inch display bearing smartphone, the Obi Alligator has a nice compact design and thus easily fits the palm. The back panel has a pattern design with brand name “Obi” and its logo printed right in the middle. The back panel has a matte finish and thus not only feels good in hand but also it gives a great grip. The curved right and left edges further aides griping. The back panel is removable and below that lies the removable battery, SIM and micro SD card slots. The power button lies in the right-hand side while the volume rocker is on the left. A metallic thread goes around its edges and adds the necessary bling to the device. Overall, the Obi Alligator looks classic and is comfortable to use.
The 4.5 inch display of Alligator S454 has qHD resolution. Though few of its competitors offer high definition resolution, one should remember that qHD Resolution for a 4.5 inch display is equally good as HD resolution for a 5 inch device. It has decent brightness levels as well and the display has been made with IPS technology to offer wide viewing angles.
Due to the small screen (as I was habituated to the 5 inch screen), you may face some issues while typing and the screen also is not the best one in its price range but the touch issue is not that acute; only while playing games you may feel that the screen fails to respond to some faint touches.
Performance
The Obi Alligator has a fairly good combination of hardware and software that includes a 1.3 GHz quad core processor, 1 GB RAM, Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, and Mali 400 MP GPU. There is 8 GB of in-built storage of which 6.14 GB is available for users. There is an expandable storage slot as well which can accommodate a micro SD card of up to 32 GB. However, the phone doesn’t have USB on the go feature and thus doesn’t accept external storage devices.
Coming to the performance part, the Obi Alligator manages to play even heavy games like Real Racing 3 and Tiki Kart 3D (much to our surprise). That’s why the phone has also managed to get decent Antutu benchmark score of 18457.
As far as calling and browsing and navigation is concerned, it is at par with other devices in its price range.
Camera
The Alligator has an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. Considering its price tag of Rs 6,450, we had not expected much from this handset and we were not surprised either by the results it delivered.
The 8 megapixel rear camera does manage to capture okay images and HDR option should be used for decent images. Below are some images capture through its rear camera which will give you a fair bit of idea about its imaging capabilities.
