The Coolpad Mega is also available for Rs 6,999 and has a metal unibody as the Redmi 3S.

Coolpad has done a pretty good job since its entry into the Indian market last year thanks to its budget smartphones. It has recently launched yet another attractive handset, called Coolpad Mega 2.5D (Y83). The phone is exclusively to Amazon India and is available through flash sales. Infact, Amazon is holding its flash sale today (August 31) at 2 PM.
Coolpad Mega
The phone has already got a lot of attention due to its superb specs and low price. But is it good enough for Rs 6,999 considering that Redmi 3S is also available for the same price?
Coolpad Mega
Here we have tried to find that answer.

Design

Like Xiaomi’s Redmi 3S, the Coolpad Mega has metal unibody and it is gorgeous as well. The matte finish gives good grip. Though it doesn’t have curved sides like the Redmi 3S, but I don’t have any complaint against its flat sides.
Coolpad Mega
The Coolpad Mega is taller and wider than the Redmi 3S as it has a bigger 5.5 inch display and you might find it not as attractive as the Xiaomi handset. However, despite its bigger profile, the Coolpad phone feels much lighter than the Redmi 3S.
Coolpad Mega
For Rs 6,999, the Coolpad Mega’s 5.5 inch header is much better than you could have bargained for. The display has high definition (1280×720 pixels) which is the best you could ask for in a phone. So if you want a bigger phone than the Redmi 3S, then the Mega is an ideal alternative. The display of Coolpad Mega won’t disappoint you with its touch input or brightness.

Performance

For a phone at such a low price, the Coolpad Mega definitely impresses with 3 RAM and quad core (Mediateks MT6753P). The chipset’s output was commendable.

Though I initially encountered some lags while navigating from to app but the phone had no problem in playing high end game like Real Racing 3.
Coolpad Mega
A curious thing I found out in the phone is the little tweaks of its UI. The Coolpad Mega has Marshmallow operating system but it has slightly tweaked UI called Cool UI 8.0. Like in LeEco phones, to access quick setting you have to swipe from the bottom of the screen. There is no app home and everything is in the home page itself.
Coolpad Mega
The Coolpad Mega has a 2500 battery which also did a pretty job and used to offer me about 8-10 hours back up with moderate usage but don’t expect more than that. Infact, only in this area that the Xiaomi Redmi 3S looks better than Coolpad Mega.

Camera

The phone has 8-megapixel camera both in its front and rear panels. The cameras are quite fast and can take pictures from very close quarters. They can take really good pictures in good lighting. I saw no issues with their colour output either. Here are some samples which would give you a decent idea about its camera capabilities.

Connectivity, storage and other features
Coolpad Mega
The Coolpad Mega has a hybrid slot allowing users to use two SIM cards or one SIM and a micro card for additional storage (up to 32 GB). Note that it has decent 16 GB of internal storage space. The phone offers 4G, WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), 4.0, GPS, a 3.5 mm jack and a micro USB port. I had extensively used its WiFi, data connectivity, and other connectivity features but never encountered any issue.

Verdict

To sum up, we would suggest you to consider the Coolpad Mega if you are not looking for a small phone like Xiaomi Redmi 3S which we reviewed recently. The Coolpad Mega won't disappoint you at Rs 6,999.
