Disney+ Hotstar is an Indian over-the-top streaming service owned by Novi Digital Entertainment, a subsidiary of Disney’s Star India. It features two paid subscription plans— “VIP”, which focuses on domestic programmes and sports content (including Indian Premier League cricket), and “Premium” featuring premium international films and television series (including HBO, Showtime and other American original series).
Disney+ Hotstar is among the Top 10 OTT platforms in India because of its pricing and wide range of content. These are Rs 499 Mobile plan, Rs 899 Super plan and Rs 1,499 Premium plan. They have a validity of 1 year, however, the benefits with each of them is different.
With the mobile plan, you can watch Disney+ Hotstar only on one device at a time with stereo audio quality and 720p video quality. You will be able to watch on a mobile device only, with this plan. The Super Plan supports two devices at a time and Dolby 5.1 audio quality. You will get 1080p video quality on this plan. The most expensive Premium plan will allow you to log in to any four devices at a time. The plan also supports 4K video quality and Dolby 5.1 audio quality.
2Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video is a very popular video streaming service or OTT service in India. Amazon Prime Video was launched in 2016 in the country and has been among the Top 10 OTT platforms in India from the day of its launch. Besides English, Prime Video is available in six Indian languages as of December 2018. Amazon India launched Amazon Prime Music in February 2018.
Prime subscription presently also includes free Amazon music alongside unlimited free, quick delivery. The annual Amazon Prime membership will cost you Rs 1499. If you opt for a monthly plan, it’ll now cost you Rs 179. For the 3-month plan, you will now have to spend Rs 459.
3Voot
Voot is another video-on-demand (OTT) platform, part of Viacom18 Digital Ventures, the digital arm of Viacom18. It has over 35,000 hours of content for audiences with varying choices and preferences, covering Colors (Hindi), MTV, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Colors Kannada, Colors Marathi, Colors Bangla, Colors Super and Colors Gujarati.
It has a premium subscription called Voot Select with which you get access to Voot Originals, Latest International shows, Live Channels, Ad-free Experience and 24 hours Before-TV premieres of Colors and MTV content. It also works for free with some content but with ads. It has a single plan which costs Rs 299 a year as a part of an offer. Otherwise, it costs Rs 999 a year.
4Netflix
Netflix is one of the popular streaming services in India. The OTT platform offers four subscription plans including Mobile, Basic, Standard and Premium. The Mobile plan costs Rs 199 monthly with 480p streaming quality. It allows you to watch Netflix on a tablet and mobile.
The mobile-only plan is priced at Rs 149. The Basic plan is priced at Rs 199. Both these offer SD playback. The Standard plan which offers HD playback is available for Rs 499. The premium plan that offers Ultra HD playback across 4 screens simultaneously is available at Rs 649.
Netflix faces tough competition with other OTT platforms in India such as Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Voot and Eros Now, each of which charge lower subscription rates than Netflix. It is among the Top 10 OTT platforms in India because of the amazing quality of the content it provides.
5ZEE5
ZEE5 is an Indian video on demand service run by Essel Group via its subsidiary Zee Entertainment Enterprises. It was launched in India on 14 February 2018 with content in 12 languages. Subscribers will be able to enjoy entertainment content without any intrusive ads and across devices. Some of Zee’s popular TV shows like Kumum Bhagya and Kundali Bhagya in Hindi, Sembaruthi in Tamil, Jothe Jotheyali in Kannada and Mazya Navryachi Bayko in Marathi and many more would be now available on ZEE5 before telecast on Television.
As of now, the Zee5 12 months plan costs Rs 499 as limited period offer. Otherwise, the plan costs Rs 999. With the yearly plan, you can watch on 3 screens at a time. With the Rs 299 plan, you get to watch on 2 screens at a time for a validity of three months.
6Jio Cinema
Jio is an Indian OTT platform offered by the Ambani-owned telco, Reliance Jio. It is an exclusive platform for Jio users and is offered without any additional charges. It is bundled with almost all of Jio’s postpaid and prepaid plans.
The streaming services publishes movies, TV shows, Documentaries, and Jio Exclusives. The service was launched on September 5th, 2016. The App supports both web and smartphone platforms. This app makes it the Top 10 OTT platforms in India because of its partnerships like with isney in the past to provide some of its content on its own JioCinema platform.
JioCinema is a free to download app and as mentioned, the service is available with Jio Plans.
7Sony LIV
Sony Liv (marketed as SONY LIV and formerly as SonyLIV) is an Indian general entertainment, video on-demand service that is owned by Sony Pictures Networks India Pvt. Ltd., based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Sony Liv’s Library consists of 18 years of content from the Sony Entertainment Network channels in India: Sony TV, Sony SAB, Sony Ten, Sony Max, Sony MAX 2, Sony PIX and Sony Six.
Sony Liv is the first Indian Over-the-top media service platform to produce music content for a Hollywood feature film – producing music for the Hindi version of the blockbuster titled Passengers, starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.
Sony LIV Premium subscription costs you Rs. 299 per month, Rs. 699 for six months, and Rs. 999 per year. The LIV Special subscription costs Rs 199 a year while the LIV Special+ costs Rs 399 for 12 months. And finally, the WWE network subscription costs Rs 299 for a year. It is featured in the Top 10 OTT platforms in India because of the exclusive content related to sony TV and off late it has bagged telecast rights for a couple of sporting events.
8Sun NXT
Sun NXT is an Indian video on demand service run by Sun TV Network specially for South Indian content. It was launched in June 2017 and has content in six languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi. Sun NXT app is available for Android and iOS devices, Smart TVs and other devices. You can find blockbusters from Mollywood, Kollywood, Tollywood as well as Sandalwood.
There are three subscription plans offered for its users on monthly, quarterly and annual basis priced at Rs 50, Rs 130, Rs 490 respectively. The monthly and quarterly subscriptions will allow only 1 screen while the annual subscription will allow 4 screens.
9Hoichoi
Hoichoi is an Indian subscription video on-demand and over-the-top streaming service focusing exclusively on Bengali language content. It is owned and maintained by SVF Entertainment Pvt Ltd with headquarters in Kolkata, India. It was launched on 20 September 2017. Hoichoi is currently available for Android, iOS, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Roku, Mi TV, LG Smart TV and Samsung Tizen.
Currently, it features over 500 film titles, including more than 100 SVF produced films and about 400 other films. Apart from this, Hoichoi contains more than 1,000 Bengali songs for audio streaming globally.
The Family plan offers 1 year subscription at Rs 899 allowing connection to 8 devices. The Solo plan comes at Rs 599 for 1 year allowing connection to 5 devices.
Lionsgate
Lionsgate Play was launched in India back in 2020. The Lionsgate Play app features a broad portfolio of content ranging from the best of original feature film and television dramas, romances, comedies, thrillers and action favourites and premieres, bringing world cinema and television series directly to Indian audiences.
The service has launched with a new price point in India, making the app available as part of two subscription models, Rs 699 for a year and Rs 99 per month. In India the app will be available to download across a broad array of platforms and devices including Google Play store, Apple app store and Amazon firestick.
Other Platforms in India
MX Player
MX Player is an Indian video streaming and video on demand platform developed by MX Media & Entertainment. The platform currently operates on an ad-supported model and has a streaming library of over 150,000 hours across 12 languages. It is available on iOS, Android and the web. The online Feature of MXPlayer is available absolutely free of cost for the users to explore.
In 2018, Times Internet acquired a majority stake in MX Player for $140 million. On 20 February 2019, MX Player was relaunched as an OTT platform with original programming. It has licensed contents from various Indian and International studios including FilmRise, Sonar Entertainment, Screen Media Films, Goldmine, Hungama, Shemaroo, Paramount Pictures and Sony Entertainment.
Stage
Stage is a regional OTT Platform that has been launched by Vinay Singhal, Shashank Vaishnav, and Parveen Singhal. This platform offers Haryanvi Dialect content including web series, movies, story telling videos and more for its viewers. Apat from Haryanvi, Stage also offers Rajasthani language content.
There is Haryanvi Songs & Comedy, Haryanvi Video, Haryanvi Folk Dance, Ragini Music, Haryanvi Singers, Latest Haryanvi Video Songs. One has to pay Rs 399 for 12 months subscription. For 6 months the membership will cost you Rs 299 and for Rs 3 months subscription, it will be Rs 199. At present, the app does not reveal any details apart from the pricing.
