We have come across many people who often choose a mobile phone of an MNC brand over the handset of an Indian manufacturer despite the former having fewer features than the latter.
Thus here we have taken two handsets – an old handset of an MNC brand and a new handset of an Indian manufacturer. Both are available for around the same price. The handsets in question are the newly launched Xolo A500S and the Sony Xperia Tipo. So let’s see how they stack up against each other.
Display and design
Xolo A500S comes with a 4 inch touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, which means it has 233 ppi pixel density. It is 8.98 mm thick, which makes it one of the slimmest smartphones in the market.
On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Tipo is 13 mm thick and has a much smaller 3.2 inch touchscreen. Moreover, it has 320 x 480 pixel resolution, which means it has only 180 ppi pixel density.
However, Tipo’s screen is said to have a shatter-proof sheet on its display, which is claimed to be scratch resistant. No such claims have been made by Xolo about A500S’s display.

Operating system
Being a new phone, the Xolo A500S is expected to have the latest Android version and it does not disappoint either with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.
Sony Xperia Tipo comes with the Android ICS operating system and would perhaps never get promoted to higher versions of Android.
Processor, RAM and GPU
Sony Xperia Tipo comes with a decent 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225AA single core processor, which is based on Cortex A5 architecture. It is assisted by Aderno 200 and has 512 MB RAM.
On the other hand, Xolo A500S has a 1.2 GHz dual core Mediatek 6572W processor, Mali 400 GPU and 512 MB RAM. Thus we expect the Xolo A500S to have much better gaming capability than the Xperia Tipo.

Memory
Both the phones have almost equal amount of memory; Xperia Tipo has 2.2 GB of internal user available memory while Xolo A500S has 4 GB of internal storage of which around 2 GB would be available for users.
Both have a 32 GB expandable micro SD card slot.
Camera
There is no front camera in the Sony Xperia Tipo. Also, it has a 3.2 Megapixel rear camera which can only capture videos in VGA resolution.
On the other hand, the Xolo A500S has a 5 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera for video calling.

Battery
The Xolo A500S comes with a 1400 mAh battery that claims to provide 10 hours of 2G talktime and 8 hours of 3G talktime. Xperia Tipo has a bigger 1500 mAh battery but it claims to provide five hours of 2G and 4 hours of 3G talktime.
However, when it comes to standby time, Xperia Tipo seems better as Sony claims 470 and 545 hours on 3G and 2G networks respectively. On the other hand, Xolo A100S claims to provide 492 and 470 hours of standby on 2G and 3G networks.
Connectivity
Xolo smartphone comes with dual SIM connectivity while Sony Xperia Tipo has a single SIM. The dual version of Xperia Tipo, called Xperia Tipo dual costs around Rs 7,500. The Xolo handset also has USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0, and WiFi (b/g/n) as other connectivity options. The A100S is also capable of downloading at HSPA (21 Mbps) speed.
Sony Xperia Tipo on the other hand has 7.2 Mbps downloading capability. It has Micro USB 2.0, WiFi (b/g/n) but Bluetooth version 2.1. Both smartphones though have GPS.
Conclusion
Clearly, Xolo A100S seems a better handset than the two with its bigger screen, better resolution, better processor, latest OS, and dual SIM connectivity. The Sony Xperia Tipo thus does not seem worth the price of around Rs 6,500. But, if you are getting it for less than Rs 6,000, you should go for it.
