Xiaomi today announced the launch Redmi 2 in India in two storage versions. The 8 GB internal storage variant of Redmi 2 carries a price tag of Rs 6,999. Xiaomi has also announced a 16 GB ROM variant of the Redmi 2 whose price is yet to be revealed. Like all other smartphones of Xiaomi, the Redmi 2 too will be available via registrations and flash sale. Note that the registration of Redmi 2 starts today (March 12) itself at 6 PM.
At first, it would seem that the Xiaomi Redmi 2 is not much different from its predecessor in terms of looks. But the new version is actually shorter, narrower and thinner than the original Redmi design. Dimensions of the new phone are 134 x 67.2 x 9.4 mm, compared to the Redmi 1S’ 137 x 69 x 9.9 mm. The Redmi 2 offers a 4.7 inch HD IPS display as the Redmi 1S. The Redmi 2 has a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 quad core processor while its predecessor has Snapdragon 400 quad core processor. As earlier said, it comes in two storage variants – 8 GB and 16 GB. The 8 GB version of Redmi 2 has 1 GB RAM while the other has 2 GB RAM.Both the variants offer an expandable storage slot for up to a 32 GB micro SD card as well.
The Redmi 2 has an 8 megapixel rear camera as the older Redmi 1S while the front camera is bumped to 2 megapixel from 1.6 MP of Redmi 1S. The rear camera is armed with 5-element lens, f/2.2 aperture, 28 mm wide angle lens, and it can record full HD videos. The front camera can record HD videos. To check its camera quality, click here.
The Redmi 2 is based on Android 4.4 and comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM, and dual SIM – both the SIM slots can carry 4G SIMs. It has USB OTG support and has GPS with GLONASS and Beidou for navigation.
