Xiaomi Mi 7 to feature wireless charging support?

Apple joined the WPC in February this year and thus launching the recent iPhones such as iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X with wireless charging.

The Xioami smartphones which have been announced so far does not feature wireless charging support. Now seems like Xiaomi has joined the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) making it possible for the next flagship smartphone from the company to support Qi standard wireless charging.

Though Xiaomi has not officially announced it’s joining the consortium, but as per a report by GSMArena, it has been spotted on the WPC member list on the official WPC website. The listing suggests that next flagship from the company will support wireless charging.

The company’s upcoming flagship smartphone would be Xiaomi Mi 7 which might be the first one to arrive with the wireless charging feature. The presence of wireless charging on Mi 7 means that it will probably be arriving with glass back. For those who don’t know, the Mi 7 is tipped to release in Q1 2018.

Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) was formed in 2008 and it has members including brands like Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and more. Wireless charging in flagship smartphones is now becoming a standard feature. Apple joined the WPC in February this year and thus launching the recent iPhones such as iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X with wireless charging. All the three iPhones have a glass back to enable the wireless charging capability. Just like Apple iPhones, the recent Samsung Galaxy S8 also features glass back to allow wireless charging.

As per a recent post on Chinese microblogging website, Weibo, the Xiaomi Mi 7 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and will be featuring 6-inch display made by Samsung. The report further says that the Mi 7 will be announced sometime in the first quarter of 2018. The Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi 6 were launched in the month of April, but the Mi 7 might arrive between January and March 2018. Other high-end smartphones which are expected to announced during that period of time include the Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7.
