Twitter faced widespread technical problems on Wednesday as many users were unable to tweet, follow accounts, or access their direct messages. The company acknowledged the issue and apologized, tweeting from its “support” account, “Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We’re aware and working to get this fixed.”
Users encountered problems when attempting to send tweets, receiving a message saying they had reached their “tweet limit.” Twitter has long limited the number of tweets an account can send, but the limit of 2,400 per day or 100 an hour is far more than most regular accounts send.

Accounts also faced difficulties when trying to follow another user, with a message saying “You are unable to follow more people at this time.” The long-standing limit of 400 followed accounts per day is again, more than a regular user would typically reach.
The cause of the widespread problems is unclear, but experts and engineers have warned that the platform is at an increased risk of fraying since Elon Musk took over and fired most of the people responsible for keeping it running.
In November, engineers who left Twitter described how they expect problems for its more than 230 million users, especially if Musk makes major changes without much off-platform testing.
One former Twitter engineer stated to AP that engineering team clusters had been reduced from about 15 people pre-Musk to just three or four, with even more resignations. The loss of institutional knowledge could result in everything breaking, the programmer warned.
