Sony has formally announced the new SmartWatch 2 at the Mobile Asia Expo 2013 in Shanghai, China. It has a slightly larger display than its older sibling and comes in an aluminum body. Sporting a totally new user interface, Sony touts the SmartWatch 2 as the secondary display for an Android based device.
The new Sony SmartWatch 2 features a 1.6-inch display with 220×176 Pixel resolution and is readable even in sunlight. Sony has given it (IP57) power to resist water till certain level and thus it stands proudly with Sony’s similar feature bearing smartphones.
On the connectivity front, the SmartWatch 2 supports Bluetooth 3.0 (surprisingly no Bluetooth 4.0) and thereby compatible with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher running smartphones.
Users can download several apps specifically developed for the SmartWatch 2 that can let the user answer or reject calls, take a photo using it as a camera button, control presentations, map a run or bike ride, read emails and messages, etc.
Sony promises to bring the 24 mm watchstraps in more colour options. Sony expects to make the SmartWatch 2 available by September this year and the pricing of the same has not been announced yet. Sony had launched the first generation SmartWatch in India for Rs 6299 and considering the improvements, the SmartWatch 2 may cost the same or more.
