Sony rolls out Android ICS beta for Xperia Play

Though the final update will be available next month, for the time being, Xperia Play users can have a taste of Android ICS on their devices with the beta upgrade.

Sony Mobile has announced the roll out of Ice Cream Sandwich beta for developers and advanced users of Xperia Play smartphone users. But it is not limited just to those users, as anyone with an unlocked Xperia Play smartphone can download and install this beta software on your device and can later upgrade to ICS when the final update is rolled out in late May or early June this year.

However, the beta update has a few important things missing. For example, Google mobile services such as Google Maps, Gmail etc aren’t included in this upgrade. And the worst by far is the removal of WiFi connectivity though there is cellular data and internet connectivity. Other than that, most services in the device will work, especially those related to gaming and controls.

The main idea behind the update is to test the device and its gaming capabilities before the roll out of the final update for devices worldwide. Users will have to unlock their boot loader in order to access and install the new upgrade.
