Free WiFi has been made available on several railway stations in Mumbai recently. Now this WiFi services have been extended to 7 more stations starting today. These stations include four Western Mumbai stations and three Central stations.
One may note that the highest speed of this internet service can be used only for the first 30 minutes after which the speed will automatically decrease. The service will be inaugurated by Indian Union Railway minister Suresh Prabhu today for stations including Churchgate, Dadar (Western/Central), Bandra, Bandra Terminus, Khar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Kalyan.
In order to avail this free WiFi service, one has to simply register their mobile numbers on the WiFi provider’s page. Next, you will receive a One Time Password (OTP) via SMS which you will be required to enter at the login page. Successful login will grant you free high-speed WiFi for next 30 minutes and post that the speed will decrease significantly.
However, this service won’t be free for long. According to Hindustan Times, the railways will eventually start charging for this service once they are done working out the payment gateways and processes.
A Khar resident Rohit Desi said, “It’s good that the railways are adding this service. Globally, free Wi-Fi is available everywhere, including malls, railway stations and restaurants. I”m glad that it”s happening here as well.” as mentioned by HT in its report.
The union railway minister will also inaugurate two elevators at Andheri station and a deck-plus-booking office at the Goregaon station. Besides, Suresh Prabhu is also planning to inaugurate facilities like air-conditioned dormitory at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and foot-over-bridges (FOBs) at Reay Road, Kings Circle, Kurla (Kasaiwada), Chembur, Karjat and Shahad.
Given the conditions of Mumbai railway stations, It’s good to see Railway Authority of India taking measures to improve passenger travel experience with amenities like free Wi-Fi, new bridges, AC dormitory.
