Samsung to unveil next generation AMOLED display at CES

The 4.5 inch flexible AMOLED prototype has been designed for smartphones and tablet PCs.

Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will demonstrate next generation AMOLED screens during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 in Las Vegas between January 6 and 9.

As per the statement issued by the company, it will exhibit the prototype of a 4.5 inch flexible with WVGA 800 x 480 resolution. The 2 mm thick flexible screen can be rolled into a cylinder with one cm radius.

Samsung’s 4.5 inch flexible AMOLED prototype has been designed for smartphones and tablet PCs. Apple’s iPad and e readers such as Amazon’s Kindle already use flexible screens that appear otherwise because of the surrounding hard body. Samsung has been working on flexible screen technology for a while and its flexible display prototype can withstand the 450-500 degree Celsius temperatures required in the manufacturing process owing to the use of a new plastic substrate.

AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays have advantages such as vivid colour, wide viewing angles, low power consumption, high contrast and extremely fast response times relative to and plasma displays.
