Samsung Galaxy devices with 128GB+ storage coming in 2014?

Samsung will be mass producing new Nand memory chip that will offer 128 GB storage while being of the same size as conventional chips.

Electronics giant Samsung has announced the commencement of mass production of its three dimensional vertical Nand memory chips. This new manufacturing technology for Nand memory chips allows chips to be smaller in size while offering more storage. This would be a big step in the making of devices that would not require additional memory modules in form of Micro cards used in devices today. The new V-Nand chip as it is called would be capable of offering up to 128 of storage space in a single chip which by far today limited to 32GB.

Samsung’s future Galaxy range of devices thus are expected to be the first ones to get these new technology based chips. So far Apple iPad 4 is the only device to come with 128 GB with the help of multiple memory modules.

But memory is not the only thing that has been improved with the adoption of this new technology. As Samsung claims “By making this CTF layer three-dimensional, the reliability and speed of the Nand memory have improved sharply. The new 3D V-Nand shows not only an increase of a minimum of 2X to a maximum 10X higher reliability, but also twice the write performance over conventional Nand flash memory.”

The technology is great and will certainly lead to better user experience and with the use the shape of the devices would also not be affected much. But its effect on pricing is remains to be seen.

Samsung has already started the mass production and it will be implemented in device starting 2014, so it is just a matter of a few months before we find out the truth.
