Samsung and LG are reported to be working on a truly bezel-less screen with all four sides curved. Unlike dual-curved display, the one with all four sides curved might land next year.
According to a report coming out of Korea, Samsung Display and LG display are both working on their own versions of a bezel-less display, which would allow a greater screen-to-body ratio of over 98 percent. If this is true, then we might have a smartphone from both the brands to feature a true bezel-less screen. Xiaomi Mi Mix has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 percent, and there is no border on the top and both the sides of the smartphone.
However, both the companies are facing some technical difficulties in the lamination process. For the unintended, lamination process is an important Processor for OLED panels as it attaches various films such OLED organic material and a touch film. The OLED panel is cut with a laser and then a lamination process is performed to attach various films.
The report further highlights that both the companies are facing difficulties in this regard as all the four corners of the display are not touch-responsive. This is because the existing lamination process does not support 4-sided edge. The report further highlights that this is the reason why Apple is opting for a flat OLED display for its upcoming iPhone 8.
If both the companies are able to crack this thing then it will surely be a big thing in the smartphone industry as smartphones will become more compact and will be able to sport a lot bigger display with increased screen-to-body ratio for an immersive experience. However, it would be fragile at the same time, as a single drop or a dent would make the screen useless. What is your thought on this? Do you think this would be a game changer?
