Back in December, it was reported that Reliance Jio will be releasing large-screen smartphones as a means to help feature phone users to switch to smartphones with 4G connection. Now it appears like the large screen smartphone will be none other than the JioPhone 3 which will be released later this year, presumably around June 2019.
From what we’ve come to know, the JioPhone 3 will be touchscreen smartphone, a first in the JioPhone lineup which previously came as a feature phone and a QWERTY phone in its first two iterations. The largest feature-phone vendor in India will soon be stepping onto the smartphone territory with an affordable choice for users to switch from their feature phones to smartphones.
BeetelBite reports that this affordable JioPhone is expected to be priced around Rs 4,500 which is the same price segment as entry-level smartphones are devised for. At that price, Reliance Jio for the second time will be increasing the price of its latest JioPhone by Rs 1,500. To recall, the original JioPhone was available for Rs 1,500 while the QWERTY JioPhoe 2 was launched for Rs 2,999.
JioPhone 3 will thus be a touchscreen affair with a 5-inch display. While we don’t know about what will power the phone, the device will feature 64GB of onboard memory with 2GB of RAM. There’s no word whether the device will run Android or a more efficient KaiOS interface.
The cameras on the JioPhone 3 will be an upgrade as well with a 2MP selfie sensor and 5MP primary camera at the back. The bump in camera comes up from last year’s JioPhone 2 which features a 2MP rear camera and a 0.3MP front-facing sensor.
Reliance Jio is expected to unveil the JioPhone 3 in June with the first batch of sales starting from August this year. The JioPhone 3 will thus come eleven months after the JioPhone 2 was launched.
