Coolpad unveiled its latest selfie-focused smartphone, the Coolpad Mega 2.5D, last week. The Chinese company claims that this smartphone has been launched under the Make in India initiative. The smartphone is priced at Rs 6,999 and will be available exclusively through Amazon via flash sales. The first flash sale will take place on 24th August. The Mega 2.5D though bigger in size competes directly against the Xiaomi’s Redmi 3S. Let’s see how it stand against the recently launched Redmi 3S.
Design and Display
The new Coolpad Mega is very similar to the Coolpad Sky 3 in terms of design. The phone feels sturdy and well-built for this prince range. The Redmi 3S, on the other hand, looks a lot like the earlier launched Redmi Note 3 with metallic unibody design. It is important to note that the Redmi 3S comes with a finger print scanner whereas the Coolpad Mega doesn’t.
If large screen size is your priority, then Coolpad Mega is the right option. The Mega comes with a 5.5 inch IPS 2.5D 720p screen which curves around the edges giving a unique viewing experience. Coming in a more compact design, the Redmi 3S sports a 5.0 inch 720 x 1280p IPS LCD display.
Memory and Storage
For multi-tasking, the new Coolpad Mega surprisingly comes with 3GB RAM which is quite impressive at this price point. The Redmi 3S still comes with a respectable 2GB RAM though the Prime version comes with 3GB RAM but is priced at Rs 8,999.
While the Redmi 3S have only 16GB internal memory, the Coolpad comes with a 32GB internal storage which is an added advantage. Both the phones come with hybrid Dual SIM slots, one of which can be used to expand storage via micro SD.
Camera
The Chinese electronics giant Coolpad boasted a lot about Coolpad Mega being a selfie camera. The Mega has an 8 Megapixel camera both in its rear and front panels with f/2.0 and f/2.2 Aperture respectively. While the actual camera performance can only be evaluated after detailed review but first impressions looked pretty good.
The Redmi 3S, on the other hand, has a 13 megapixel rear camera (f/2.0 aperture) and front 5 megapixel f/2.2 aperture camera with both of them capable of recording videos at 1080p. On paper, the rear camera of the Redmi 3S have larger megapixel count while it’s the same case with Mega’s front camera but we firmly believe that megapixel count doesn’t really matter if the performance and image processing is on par.
Processor
Both the phones run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with MIUI 8 on top in case of Redmi 3S and Coolpad’s Cool UI in the Mega 2.5D. Regarding the power, the Coolpad Mega is powered by a Media-Tek MT67355P 64-bit quad-core Chipset clocked at 1GHz with Mali T720 GPU.
The Redmi 3S sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 Octa-Core chipset clocked at 1.4 GHz and with Adreno 505. Well, Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets have always been better in terms of performance and battery optimisation but they are also vulnerable to security hacks with the latest vulnerability being the ‘Quad-Root’.
Connectivity and Battery
Redmi 3S can beat any smartphone in the market right now with its huge 4100 mAh battery giving almost 8-9 hours of Screen On Time. Whereas, the Mega comes with relatively smaller 2500 mAh battery. Clearly, if battery life is important which certainly is to most of the people, you really can’t go wrong with the Redmi 3S.
In the connectivity department, both the phones comes with usual built-in WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS etc. Moreover, both the devices are 4G enabled and also support VoLTE.
Wrapping up
It all comes down to your personal preference as to which can be your next smartphone. If you want a bigger display and can compromise on battery life then Coolpad Mega is an excellent option in the price bracket. Whereas, if you have small hands and want more compact device with outstanding battery life and can sacrifice that 1GB RAM then the Redmi 3S can be your perfect smartphone. The Redmi 3S is available on Flipkart through flash sales at Rs 6,999.
