In an event in New Delhi today, Qualcomm Technologies introduced its new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform which is designed especially for 4G LTE connectivity for entry-level feature phones. The new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform enclose various baseband functionalities along with several hardware components such as RF front end, discrete WiFi, amplifier, power management, software, audio codec and various other software components which will help feature phones operate better.
Qualcomm claims that this new SoC platform will help small OEMs and ODMs to manufacture high quality yet affordable mobile phones which otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. The new 205 SoC has been introduced keeping in mind some selected emerging markets such as India, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Further, rightly concentrating on the new LTE technologies, the new Qualcomm Mobile Platform will take advantage of LTE services like VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and VoWi-Fi (Voice over Wi-Fi). Emphasising more on the emerging markets, this new SoC will help small manufacturers in India and Southeast Asia to have more reliable, faster and secure access to financial transactions. Further, it will also enable faster downloading speeds and more battery life making it ideal for those who are not near a reliable power source all the time.
Coming to features of the new Qualcomm 205 SoC, the new Chipset supports all 2G, 3G and 4G networks along with LTE Cat 4 modem with up to 150 Mbps download speed and up to 50 Mbps upload speed. Further, it can take in 802.11 b/g/n bands for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, ANT+ and FM Radio.
It is a Dual Core SoC clocked at 1.1 GHz coupled with Adreno GPU as was the case with all Snapdragon CPUs. It can support a maximum of a 3-megapixel rear camera and also a selfie camera of the same resolution. For the display, the new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform supports VGA display at 480p resolution at 60 frames-per-second along with HD Video streaming support. Other than this, it supports dual SIM functionality, Linux based OS and is also Pin-compatible with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 210/212 chipset.
The new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform is available starting today and we can expect devices running on this chipset, by Q2 2017. For that, Qualcomm has revealed a list of OEMs and ODMs which include Micromax, Reliance Jio, LYF, Borqs, CKT, Flex etc.
