Corning today revealed that Oppo will be the first smartphone manufacturer to employ its latest glass technology – Gorilla Glass 6, which was announced earlier last month. The announcement doesn’t quite reveal which Oppo phone will flaunt the new cover glass but did say that a new flagship from Oppo will be the one, meaning the device with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 will be launched in the coming weeks. This lines up well with Oppo’s recent teasers and leaks about their upcoming F9 and F9 Pro.
Oppo has already confirmed that the Oppo F9 Pro will have a waterdrop design with the screen-to-body ratio of 90.8 per cent, featuring a waterdrop design with a tiny notch and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. So, it is more likely that the F9 will be the next flagship from Oppo and thus also the first device to boast of Gorilla Glass 6.
Upon its release, Corning revealed that the Gorilla Glass 6 was designed to make do even after 15 waist-level drops making smartphones twice as secure as its preceding technology. The glass will not only allow a device to withstand drops from higher heights but also multiple drops from the same height with no major damage. In its own testing of the Gorilla Glass 6, Corning found that 77 percent of the samples were left unharmed after surviving 20 drops from 1-meter height.
Talking about their latest announcement, Corning VP and GM, John Bayne said “We are excited to have OPPO adopt Gorilla Glass 6. OPPO’s new flagship model will provide consumers, who depend on their smartphone for every interaction in their digital lives, increased protection against multiple drops.”
