Olive telecommunications, which was first Indian company to launch a tablet, is all set to join the Android bandwagon with the launch of  its Android 2.2 based handsets.
When we asked Olive’s chairman Arun Khanna about the smartphone, he said that it will be based on the latest 2.2 Android version and will be launched in first week of March. However, he refused to comment on other details. He also said that it will not be just one smartphone but a whole range.
Sources claim that one of the smartphone that the company plans to launch will be a challenger to the Samsung Galaxy S and Apple iPad. This suggests that they will be launching smartphones with bigger touchscreens, and it will be something between a smartphone and a tablet.
We believe that since Olive is targeting the smartphone segment they might not choose to go beyond 5 inch screen size, as anything bigger will not really be pocketable.
The company has already launched many products in the country including products like Olivepad, 3G embedded netbooks and a mobile phone with AA size battery for backup.
Although they have not been able to achieve market leadership in any of the segment, they have got good traction in the CDMA dongle space.
Olive to enter Android space
Olive Telecommunications plans to launch several smartphones based on Android 2.2 Froyo platform. It also plans to have a broad portfolio with screen sizes going up to 5 inches.
