Nokia was once at a pinnacle of success in terms of smartphones with a large amount of audience, most of which being the loyal one. In India, people use to blindly buy a Nokia device even when competitors like Samsung and LG would offer more at the same price. However, with no Android integration coupled with Microsoft’s acquisition, Nokia disappeared as a brand.
But, there were always rumours about the company making comeback in the smartphone industry especially after leaks about Nokia D1C started surfing on the internet. To confirm these rumours, Nokia has finally revealed its plans to re-enter the smartphone industry.
A slide from company’s presentation at the Capital Markets Day had its plans for the year 2016,2017 and 2018 in which a bullet under the year 2017 read – ‘Nokia brand’s return to smartphones’. Apart from this, Nokia also plans to expand its VR leadership, transit Digital Health brand and expands its patent license in mobile, automotive and consumer electronics.
For 2018, the company has planned VR technology expansion, growth in remote patient care in Digital Health, continued incubation in new and adjacent areas and continued patent licensing growth and diversification.
Previously, Nokia announced that it will be holding a Keynote event at Mobile World Congress 2017 with Rajeev Suri delivering the speech which is when news about company’s comeback started appearing over the internet.
Also, as mentioned before, Nokia D1C phone has been in the news for quite some time now with recent image leaks surfacing online. Recollecting the previous rumours, Nokia D1C features a full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels resolution). It is powered by a 1.4 GHz Octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC, which is paired with Adreno 505 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage. It will be Nokia’s first Android device running on latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out of the box. It is also expected to sport a 16-megapixel auto-focus primary camera (while in AnTuTu it was listed with 13-megapixel unit) with LED flash, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies.According to GeekBench, the Nokia D1C phone got 667 in single-core test and in multi-core test it received 3229.
Recently, another device from Nokia named P1 was found hovering over the news. The device has a metal body and will have two variants, one with 5.2-inch display and another with 5.5-inch display. Both the Nokia P1 variants will sport QHD (2560 x 1440 pixel) AMOLED displays and will run on Android 7.0. Nougat with Nokia’s Z Launcher on top of it. Nokia PI could be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Snapdragon 821 SoC, which will be clubbed with 4GB of RAM at least. The smartphone is also expected to come with a powerful rear camera and will use graphene camera sensors for low light photography. Further as per report, the Nokia P1 will have IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.
