Netflix India testing a Referral Program with rewards for referring new subscribers

Netflix is testing a referral play option which will provide current Netflix members with new rewards when they refer friends and family to the streaming service. Upon referral, the new subscribers will be able to acquire a month of access to Netflix for free while existing users will get other rewards.

Netflix today launched its cheapest Rs 199 monthly mobile-only plan in India. The streaming giant is now testing a referral program for users in India which will provide existing users with rewards every time they refer a new subscriber to Netflix.

Netflix is testing a referral play option which will provide current Netflix members with new rewards when they refer friends and family to the streaming service. Upon referral, the new subscribers will be able to acquire a month of access to Netflix for free as has been mentioned in the company’s microsite.

It’s unclear what the existing users will get as rewards at the moment as the feature is still being explored. Prior to this, Netflix’s referral program reportedly offered a free month of Netflix across select regions to existing customers when people joined through a referral code. However, free usage was only valid for six months in total when referring to a friend.

To send a referral, users can follow the instructions given below.

1. Sign in to your Netflix account on Android.

2. Select any non-Kids profile and tap on “More” at the bottom right of your screen.

3. Under Give Free Netflix to Your Friends, refer a friend using preferred email or app. You can also copy or paste the referral link in an email or message to someone.

Netflix’s newest Rs 199 per month mobile-only plan offers standard definition content at 480p resolution. The plan is meant only for streaming on a smartphone or tablet and can thus not be used on a PC or a streaming device. Netflix’s latest move comes as a means to tackle competition from Hotstar’s Rs 199 monthly subscription and Amazon’s Rs 129 per month Prime Video membership.
