We all know that the dual-camera setup is now becoming de riguer these days with many top-notch manufacturers marketing it as one of the most important features in their smartphones. Earlier this year we saw Huawei rolling out its latest flagship, the P9 (Rs. 39,999), with a dual-camera setup. Now LG has launched its latest flagship device, the V20 (Rs. 54,999), in the Indian market with a dual-camera setup coupled with maxed out specs sheet. Both of them pack some top-of-the-line internals and come with some head-turning design language. But which one is better? Will it be the Huawei P9? Or will it be the LG V20? Let’s find out.
Design
When it comes to the looks, both of them meet the mark, with a pleasing look and feel in the hands. While both of them sport an aerospace-class aluminium body, the V20 comes with a removable rear panel (which is a scarcity at this price point), as opposed to the metal unibody design of the P9. The Huawei P9 is sleeker and lighter than the LG V20 as the former is just 6.95mm thick and weighs 144 grams, while the latter is 7.6mm thick and weighs 174 grams. But of them of are design marvels in their own right, but on paper Huawei P9 does sneak ahead on just the form factor and weight.
Display
On the display front, the LG V20 sports a 5.7-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display coupled with a secondary 2.1-inch screen with 160 x 1040 pixels resolution. On the other hand, the Huawei P9 comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display. Clearly, the LG V20 steals a march here as compared to the P9, with the secondary screen on the V20 settling the issue beyond doubt, for most doubters.
Hardware
Talking about specs, the LG V20 is powered by Qualcomm’s state-of-the-art Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. The smartphone is packed with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which can be further expanded up to 2TB via microSD card. While the Huawei P9 is powered by the company’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 955 octa-core processor coupled with Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. The device comes with a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage expandable up to 128GB. On the connectivity front, the LG V20 supports 4G LTE, WiFi (802.11 ac), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and NFC and comes with a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC for a superior music experience. The Huawei P9 supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, Infrared, and not to forget USB Type-C. If we look at the sheer specs sheet, then LG V20 emerges as a clear winner as it comes with some advanced processor, more RAM and storage as compared to the Huawei P9. In other words, it does a handy job of justifying the significant price premium on the P9.
Software
When it comes to the software front, the LG V20 was the first device that came with Android Nougat 7.0 pre-installed-even before Google brought its Pixel lineup to market. While the Huawei P9 still ships with a dated Android 6.0 Marshmallow with company’s skin EMUI 4.1 running on top of it. With the two smartphones having diffrent Android versions, we will let this one pass, as it will boil down to consumer preferences.
Camera
This is where it gets interesting. Both the smartphones come with dual-camera at the rear. The LG V20 sports a 16-megapixel sensor with OIS, Hybrid Auto-Focus, f/1.8 Aperture and a wide-angle 8-megapixel fixed focus second camera. On the other hand, the Huawei P9 comes with two 12-megapixel rear cameras-one captures colour images, while the other clicks Monochrome photos-with Leica branding. Although, we are yet to test the camera of the LG V20, but the Huawei P9 camera performance was solid, and the monochrome shots taken from the camera did deliver some impressive output. It would be interesting to see the performance of the wide-angle lens used by LG.
Battery
On the battery front, the LG V20 is powered by a 3200mAh removable battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology, while the Huawei P9 packs a 3000mAh battery. On paper, the LG V20 sports a better battery backup as compared to the Huawei P9.
Wrapping Up
To conclude, both the smartphones, without any doubt, do come with some interesting internals coupled with a premium design language, but if you look at the sheer specs sheet, then LG V20 emerges as a winner with some superior display, specs and more battery backup as compared to the Huawei P9. But at a serious premium to the P9. But that doesn’t mean that the P9 is an underdog, as it remains a handy option at the sub 40K range, with a great camera and performance.
