Jigsee to offer video streaming on 2G network

Jigsee a technology startup has launched an app which allows users to stream videos even on slow 2G networks. It has more than 100,000-minute strong and growing library of videos that covers Bollywood, spiritual and entertaining Infotainment content.

Jigsee, a Canadian-Indian mobile video streaming start-up, has announced a new which allows users to view video content on a normal no-frills mobile phone for free.

The beta version of the application, Jigsee, will be available from August 15 for download at half a dozen app stores including OVI, Cellmania (Tata Docomo, Airtel). Appia (Opera, Mobile2day) and at its website m.jigsee.com.

Its smart client technology helps deliver continuous video flow on wireless data networks as slow as 50 (the average speed of data-rates across India is estimated to be 60 Kbps).

To begin with, a few hundred Java enabled mobile handset models will support the Jigsee application. The plan is to support most phones, including those with the operating system over a period of time. Jigsee is in talks with handset makers to embed their phones with the Jigsee application.

The application supports auto-bookmarking feature, which automatically resumes video where it was disrupted.

The Jigsee app also automatically adjusts the quality of the video based on the available network speed, so higher the speed higher the quality of the video.

The app works on all networks including 2G (GPRS), 3G, as well as WiFi or any other kind of wireless internet network. On phones that support automatic switching between networks (ex. GPRS to WiFi), Jigsee streams will play continuously without stopping.

“Jigsee is more than a technology, software or mobile application. Jigsee is our way of dissolving borders that prevent entertainment, education, and informational content from being equally accessible to everyone,” says 35-year old Jigsee founder and chief executive officer Ray Newal.

The Jigsee site has over 100,000 minutes of premium entertainment content from top tier Indian broadcasters including UTV, UTV Bindaas, Mukta Arts, 1take Media, Swami Films, Sethia Audio Video and Speed Records, Spice Digital.

Content genres available on Jigsee include trailers, scenes, songs from Bollywood movies, as well as news and events related to films. Short films and documentaries also find place on Jigsee. Besides devotional content, there is also trendy content on fashion, lifestyle and, yoga. The content is available in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Punjabi.

Being able to play videos on 2G network, it would help users minimise their monthly bills as unlimited plans on 2G are available for as little as Rs 5 for a day and Rs 95 for a month on most networks.
