Sad News for those of you who were looking forward to the availability of Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 and Mi Mix in India, which the company launched yesterday at an event in Beijing.
Killing the hopes of Xioami India fans, Hugo Barra, Vice President, Global Operations – Xiaomi said to Gizmodo, “Mi Note 2 and Mi Mix are not coming to India. The reason why is very simple to explain. Our portfolio in India is very small. We focus on having one flagship every year which is Mi 5. From a portfolio perspective, we have one flagship a year in India”
Justifying his statement further, Barra said that Xiaomi didn’t have enough capabilities to market two flagships in India at the moment and this year’s flagship i.e. Mi 5 has already been launched. He also expressed regret for not launching the 64GB variant of Mi 5 which would have cost a bit more but would probably have witnessed better sales. Adding to this as reported by Gizmodo India, Xiaomi is not likely to launch the Mi 5s and Mi 5 Plus which has already been launched in China about 2 months ago.
Xiaomi’s reticence even after having operations in India for quite sometime is a little surprising, when we compare comparable competitors like Gionee, Huawei ,Oppo and more, each of whom has been happy to go with a burst of options. At a time when other brands are aggressively targeting the Indian market and its many segments, the statement from Barra points to a limited targeting policy from Xiaomi, which may not really make them a significant player in the medium term.
Previously, Xiaomi launched its Mi 4 two months after its official launch in China and the device didn’t do well. However, Barra confirmed that the company will open Mi Home Experience Centers in India soon where people could experience Xiaomi’s latest devices and eventually purchase them online.
