Hands on: Spice Stellar Pad Mi 1010

Spice has launched its first 10 inch Android tab, which features the latest Android 4.1, an HD IPS display & a 1.5 GHz dual core processor. Here is our first impression of the tablet.

The Indian tablet market is buzzing with action, especially from home-grown brands. And Spice has fired its latest salvo with a powerful and good-looking 10 inch tablet. The Spice Stellar Tab Mi 1010 sports a 10.1 inch high definition IPS panel display, and is based on Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system.

It comes with powerful specs, which include a 1.5 GHz dual core processor and 7600 battery. How do they work together as a package? Here is our first impression.

Design

The tablet is a good-looking one-the front is all glass finished in black, while the rear is finished in dual tone metallic shade. The bottom has a darker aluminium finish while the rest of the back panel is two shades lighter. The back panel is generally flat and tapered around the edges.

Overall, the tablet comes across as a thin, well-finished product. The camera sits bang in the centre of the top of the device, and there is a dual speaker grill near the camera. The only bad looking part is the Spice logo, which looks as though it is painted on the back rather than etched into the metal. You also get Spice and the model name printed on the darker stripe on the bottom.

Display

The best part of the tablet is its display, a 10.1 inch IPS panel with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The display is bright and being high definition feels rich in colour and offers very good sharpness.

Spice has given a white wallpaper as default, which makes the screen brighter than it might actually be, but the screen is bright enough.

Performance

We used the tablet for a very short time, but it behaved well and did not lag at all. We played games like Temple Run, Riptide GP and Shark Dash, which are all graphics intensive games, and we are happy with the way it handled these games without any jitters.

We will see how it holds this performance with longer usage, but right now it is very satisfactory.

Battery

Spice is shipping the tablet with 7600 mAh battery, which is 600 mAh bigger than Samsung’s tablet of the same size. And while Samsung claims 10 hours’ backup with that tablet we think this tablet should offer similar back up time if not more.

However, it will all depend on how optimised the processor is for battery saving.

Camera

The tablet has a 3.0 rear camera, which is very average. The front facing camera is a unit but surprisingly performance is much better than what the competition has to offer with similar camera specifications.

OS and apps

Spice is offering stock version Android Jelly Bean 4.1 on this tablet, which is almost the latest (4.2 is the latest). The only change by Spice, which is a clock on the home screen, doesn’t look great. In fact it looks imported right from Spice’s smartphones without any resizing to fit the bigger screen.

Spice has included some of the apps like TOI and Dhingana, which are anyway free on the Google Play Store. Other than that you don’t get anything from Spice. With Android Jelly Bean you also get browser, and a better and smoother user interface.

Conclusion

The tablet is priced at Rs 12,999 and if its performance is going to remain the same in the long term (and we have the tablet to test that) we will recommend the tablet as a good buy, or in fact a very good buy.

We will publish the review soon, and we hope that performance does remain the same as quality.
