Google is working on a new Browser for Android operating system. A Google team would be working with WebKit on the new browser which will be completely open source — though the Android-specific elements will be removed from the browser.
Android users have always wondered why Chrome browser is not present on the platform yet — especially since the same company makes both these products. Google was using another browser on Android, which was not called Chrome although it did share some code with Chrome.
According to a WebKit blog post, “We anticipate a reasonably small set of changes to the Chromium port to achieve this. We’re fully committed to maintaining this new flavour of the Chromium port of WebKit, and having a build bot up and running as soon as possible will make this an easier task.”
Google’s move is likely to result in a mature mobile browser, if the experience of other browsers based on the WebKit, including Safari on iOS, and browsers on Samsung Bada and others are anything to go by. Google has always been conscious of branding issues, so expect the browser to be named Chromium or Chrome.
