Ever since Microsoft unveiled the ChatGPT-powered version of its Bing search engine, the industry has shaken up. While it may not be the ideal go-to choice for many as of now, the new Bing brings Microsoft’s best foot forward into the AI space and Google seems to be worried as it is still behind in this race. To rival Microsoft and other big organisations in making AI the new normal, Google has announced that it is bringing ChatGPT-like AI features in its products such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.
Google made the announcement via a blog post where it wrote that it is all set to bring a new set of AI features integrated into its Google Workspace ecosystem, that includes its services such as Docs, Gmail, Slides, Sheets and more. However, these new features will be available only to a limited set of trusted testers as of now.
As for the new AI-powered features, these will help you with the following tasks:
- Draft, reply, summarise, and prioritise your Gmail
- Brainstorm, proofread, write, and rewrite in Docs
- Bring your creative vision to life with auto-generated images, audio, and video in Slides
- Go from raw data to insights and analysis via auto completion, formula generation, and contextual categorisation in Sheets
- Generate new backgrounds and capture notes in Meet
- Enable workflows for getting things done in Chat
The features in Gmail and Docs seem to be the best one for writers. “Whether you’re a busy HR professional who needs to create customized job descriptions, or a parent drafting the invitation for your child’s pirate-themed birthday party, Workspace saves you the time and effort of writing that first version. Simply type a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will instantly be generated for you”, said Google.

Next, Google is adding new generative AI capabilities to help you rewrite stuff. For instance, if you’ve jotted down a few bullets on your phone from a recent meeting and want to transform them into a more polished summary to share with your team, Google’s new AI features can do it for you. Furthermore, Gmail also gets a new “I’m feeling lucky” option which acts as a playful voice for the AI.
Google says AI cannot replace humans
Google reinforces its beliefs by saying that “AI is no replacement for the ingenuity, creativity, and smarts of real people. Sometimes the AI gets things wrong, sometimes it delights you with something offbeat, and oftentimes it requires guidance. With all this in mind, we’re designing our products in accordance with Google’s AI Principles that keep the user in control, letting AI make suggestions that you’re able to accept, edit, and change”.
Google says it will launch these new experiences this month via its trusted tester program, starting with English in the United States. Then, it’ll iterate and refine the experiences before making them available more broadly to consumers, small businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions in more countries and languages.
