First take: LG G Flex

LG G Flex will be made available in the market in the last week of January 2014 and is expected to be priced at Rs 55,000.

Innovation, innovation and innovation seems to the top priority of LG now-a-days. After coming up with innovative placement of volume rocker and power button on the back panel just below the camera, which can be accessed using the index finger, in LG G2, the company has now launched the G Flex with a curved body.

LG has announced the G Flex for India today in a special event organised in New Delhi where the company told that the phone will hit retail market in the last week of January 2014 for about Rs 55,000. At the event, we got a chance to test the phone for a brief moment and here is what we felt in our first interaction with the device.

The 177 grams weighing LG G Flex has a 6 inch curved display with display resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The handset comes armed with 2.26 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and 2 RAM. Besides, it has a 13 megapixel rear camera, 2.1 megapixel front camera, 32 GB inbuilt memory, 4.2.2, and a 3500 battery.

Look and feel

The most noticeable feature of the LG G Flex phablet is its curved design which can result in its sales if it clicks with the user.

It has a plastic body but the major attraction of the device as mentioned earlier is the curved screen that curves from top to bottom, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Round (which is not available in India), which curves from left to right.

Like LG G 2, G Flex also has volume rocker and power button placed on the back panel just below the camera, which can be accessed using the index finger.

The bottom panel of the G flex houses a 3.5 mm headset jack, micro-USB port and a microphone. On the side panels you will find a micro slot. The back panel of the phone is not removable which accommodates camera with flash, power key and volume rocker and speaker grill.
LG G Flex
The 6 inch display and the curved design makes the device look lot taller. LG G Flex fits comfortably in palm but if you have a smaller palm you will not find it comfortable to access different areas of display screen with your thumb. You will be forced to use two hands.
LG G Flex
I did like holding the device in my hand but LG G Flex in not meant to kept in the upper pocket as it will not fit in and one has to careful while bending so as not to drop the phone. Also, I guess I need to spend some more time with the device before I can say, “I felt comfortable using the LG G flex.”

I feel people will take a longer time in adjusting to a curved phone than getting used to placement of volume rocker and power key in the back panel. Overall LG needs to be complimented for trying something new yet again.

Camera

LG G Flex has a 13 megapixel rear camera with auto focus and optical image stabilisation features. It has a 2.1 megapixel front camera as well. In the low lighting condition where I was using the smartphone picture quality of rear camera was decent. I will be able talk in detail about its output in different lighting when I do a complete review of the device.
LG G Flex
Like LG G2, the G Flex also sports an that has a feature – Shoot and Clear mode, which removes moving objects from your photos.

Display:

Since LG G Flex has a curved screen one doesn’t need an IPS panel to have a uniform display at all the angles. The display quality was decent; I could not though play any games or videos on the device so will reserve views on the overall display quality till a complete review.

Add ons:

Apart from inheriting remote control and Q slide feature of LG G 2, LG G Flex is claimed to be scratch-proof back panel. Basically, the back panel has a special coating that “heal” the scratches that can be due to keys or coins in the pocket. LG claims the warmer the temperature the faster is the healing. Does it really work? We will let you know when we do the review.
LG G Flex
In LG G Flex one will also find to new feature on the app front – dual window and swing lock screen. In dual screen mode one can watch two apps by splitting the scene and in swing lock screen one can change the lock screen image depending on how you hold the phone. I got very little time to spend with the device so I wasn’t able to test these feature but as soon we get the device for review we will let you know whether it is a gimmick or a value add.

First take:

LG G Flex is big on innovation and stands out in the crowd of smartphones available in the market. Will it succeed or is it worth buying? Will let you know when we do its complete review and the official price of the device is revealed.
LG G Flex
In the meantime I can say if it is priced above Rs 60,000, then it may not find many buyers.
