First look: Lenovo P780

Mix of power, performance and a bigger battery on a 5 inch device for Lenovo.

Lenovo stormed into the Indian mobile phone market with six handsets – K900, P780, S820, S920, A706 and A390 – just a couple of days back.

We have already talked about the Lenovo K900 and the A390; here we have discussed our first hand impression of the Lenovo P780 which is priced at Rs 22,529.

To be honest the Lenovo P780 has something that would definitely attract the average buyer without any doubt. The device has an HD IPS display, quad core processor and a 4000 mAh battery pack which is huge in contrast to what most devices offer today.

The Lenovo P780 comes with a big 5 inch display but the extra bezel around the display makes it almost 5.5 inch in size. The bezel around the display also gives a fillip to its overall look.

The smartphone is available only in deep black colour with a flush front dressed in black with three capacitive touch based keys for controls. The colour options although would have been nice for this device but we have no complaints with the black version either. The back panel of the device is made up of metal and has been given a brushed metal finish, this not only adds to the look but helps the device by increasing its durability and also giving it’s a thermal design advantage as well which can be beneficial while charging the huge 4000 mAh battery.

The back panel although is removable but the battery itself is not removable as it is a non-standard battery but considering the size and capacity of the battery there is no need to lug a replacement battery.

The 5 inch display of the Lenovo P780 comes with HD (1280 x 720 pixel) resolution which is superb and does justice to most functions on the device. The colour reproduction of the display is good but the brightness levels on the device seem a little low for being sunlight legible. But overall the refresh rates are high while the contrast levels are perfect and moreover being an IPS (In Plane Switching) it offers wide viewing angels as well. The display also comes with a scratch resistant mineral glass on top.

The Lenovo P780 is a dual SIM device and the back cover has been made removable to accommodate the same. The device has a non-removable battery which might raise a few questions on how to reset the device if it freezes as the 4000 mAh battery would take ages to drain. Well Lenovo thought it through and have given a reset button on the device right under the back panel close to the memory card slot that would be the solution in the unlikely event.

The Lenovo P780 is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core Mediatek MT 6589W processor, the PowerVR Series5XT graphic engine and 1 RAM. With the combination, the device is expected to give good all round performance. The smartphone has Idea desktop user interface which seems quite fast in our first interaction.

The Lenovo P780 offers Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system as well.

There is also an 8 camera capable of recoding HD resolution videos at 30 frames per second but it has only a front camera.

The Lenovo P780 is definitely an exciting Android smartphone for the price of Rs 22,529. The device is superbly built has a brilliant display and has good hardware. We will try to bring a comprehensive review of the Lenovo P780 as soon as possible.
