First look: Lava Iris 502

Lava has recently brought the Iris 502 smartphone which comes with a 5 inch display, Android Jelly Bean and other attractive features.

We got a chance to get our hands on the new Lava Iris 502 and here is our first hand impression of the phone.


Like Iris 501, Lava Iris 502 is a classic example of quality engineering and superior built quality as well. The smartphone comes in a black colour only, which looks good on the Iris 502. The device has a glossy front with a matte back and side panel that while providing better handling provides protection from scratches.


The display of Lava Iris 502 is protected by a scratch resistant glass layer that is much better than plastic based scratch resistant surfaces and adds a touch of class to the device as well. The front of the device has a flush finish with no hardware keys, all thanks to the Android Jelly Bean. Even the function keys have been integrated within the bezel with the use of capacitive touch keys, making both operations and design better.

The standout feature of the Lava Iris 502 is its 5 inch LCD display. The display features a true 480 x 800 pixel resolution, which although is on the lower side, does impress with its quality. In terms of the brightness and contrast, the Iris 502’s display is good. The display has 16:9 aspect ratio that makes it perfect for watching movies as well as playing games.

The Lava Iris 502 is powered with a single core Mediatek 6575 processor running at 1 GHz. The device handles applications smartly and without any stress. But real world test of the device will only be done once we get the device in our labs for detailed testing.

The Lava Iris 502 comes with a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash; it is capable of recording videos as well. The phone is 3G ready so wherever users get 3G network can make use of the high speed data too or else they can hook it up to any WiFi connection and enjoy the fun of high speed data anywhere. It has a 2000 mAh battery as well.

Although the Lava Iris 502 comes in as the next in line device, it comes with a single core processor so there will be a definitive performance loss seen with the device along with that the device also gets a smaller 2000 mAh battery pack but a lithium Ion one that offers longer backup and makes the device lighter as well. The lava Iris 502 is now retailing for around Rs 8,600 which is almost Rs 1,000 cheaper than the older Iris 501. However, the phone has a single core processor unlike Iris 501’s dual core processor. Also, it has a smaller 2000 mAh battery against Iris 501’s 2300 mAh battery. So is it wise to buy the Iris 502 instead of Iris 501 in order to save just around Rs 1,000? We will answer the question in our review of the handset very soon.
