First Look: Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone

The smartphone comes with impressive specifications and performs well.

Huawei just announced Ascend P1 S, which is the company’s latest flagship phone. This is currently the slimmest phone in the world with a width of 6.68 mm.

It comes with a powerful 4.3 inch screen with qHD (960 x 540 pixel) resolution. It might not be the best screen we have seen (typically on Samsung devices,) but is certainly in the top rung.

The 1.5 GHz dual core TI OMAP 4460 of Huawei Ascend P1 S is also the best in the business right now. There are other phones that use this processor, or processors with similar speeds. The device also comes with a healthy 1 RAM.

Huawei Ascend P1 S is based on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and currently has no user interface tweaks from Huawei, though it might not stay that way when the phone is released in the second quarter (March to May) as all the other phones from Huawei get custom user interfaces.

In terms of design and build quality, the Ascend P1 S leaves nothing much to complain about. It looks very sexy with a slim profile, but the build quality could be improved further.

Ascend P1 S may come in three colours – metallic black, ceramic white, and cherry-blossom pink.

The Huawei handset has an 8 megapixel rear camera with flash and is capable of capturing HDR (high dynamic range) images, and high definition (1080p) videos. The front facing 1.3 megapixel camera is also capable though at only 720p.

Ascend P1 S is not the biggest. It is a 1670 unit and with such a powerful spec sheet, the battery life may not last for a whole day with normal usage.

On the connectivity front, the smartphone has penta-band 3G, 3.0, WiFi and support. HDMI support is missing but you can always connect a WiFi enabled TV.

The little time that we spent is certainly not enough to give a clear verdict, but we had a good experience with Huawei Ascend P1 S. Given that it is a Huawei device, the price is expected to be around Rs 25,000 to Rs 28,000, which is very reasonable considering its features. Since it boasts of the best specs in the market, this could be a killer product in Huawei’s arsenal.
