Dell to re-enter tablet market with Windows 8

Dell has discontinued its earlier Android based tablet - Streak, but has not ruled out another Android tablet either.

Dell has officially confirmed that it is looking to launch a Windows 8 operating system based tablet.

“We have a road-map for tablets that we haven’t announced yet. You’ll see some announcements (in this regard) in the back half of the year,” Dell’s chief commercial officer Steve Felice was quoted as saying by Reuters.

He also added, “We’re very encouraged by the touch capability we are seeing in the beta versions of Windows 8.”

Dell, which has been a favored PC supplier for many enterprises, feels that the tablet market is still wide open and there is a clear need for a tablet that offers security and interoperability that the enterprises need.

Windows 8 is the latest edition of Microsoft’s Windows operating system. The latest version of the operating system is designed to work across PC and Tablet environment and is tuned to work with touch screens, something that was missing in the earlier versions of the OS.

This will be Dell’s second stint with the tablets. Dell’s first tablet – Streak, was based on operating system. The range has now been discontinued but Dell has not ruled out an Android based tablet in the future either.

The Windows 8 tablet from Dell is expected to be launched by end of this year, and will be tuned to work with the enterprise IT networks as well as in the end consumer hands.
