BlackBerry will not launch 10 inch PlayBook

RIM plans to use QNX (PlayBook's operating system) for a new 1.2 GHz dual core BlackBerry smartphone. With PlayBook's plans on the backburner the new smartphone could be released soon.

Ever since the launch of RIM’s PlayBook in India, the company has been actively promoting its tablet here. But rumours to scrap an earlier plan of producing a 10 inch PlayBook have surfaced and it seems RIM will now focus more on smartphones and its QNX operating system.

According to N4BB, PlayBook 2, or the 10 inch PlayBook project has been scrapped so that RIM can focus on a smartphone running PlayBook’s QNX operating system. The main aspect of the phone will be its 1.2 GHz and a 4.3 inch touchscreen.

The smartphone plan was announced way back in December, and it seems that RIM is in a hurry to come out with this phone to bolster its dwindling market share in the smartphone space. The tablet market is yet to be established, so the company has some time to cement its place there.

However, there is no date announced for the planned smartphone yet. N4BB also said that RIM has started promoting the PlayBook. The device is currently said to be scheduled for release in October this year.
