BlackBerry DTEK50 vs Lenovo Z2 Plus – Outgunned?

Note that we are considering the 32 GB variant for Lenovo Z2 Plus as it is priced at Rs 19,999.

BlackBerry launched a couple of smartphones today here in India – BlackBerry DTEK50 and DTEK60 at Rs 21,990 and Rs 46,990 respectively. While, DTEK60 seems to be the company’s flagship device, DTE50 is more of a mid-range handset with some decent specifications. BlackBerry claims these devices to be the most secure smartphones ever. In the 20K budget range, we have the Z2 Plus from Lenovo which is actually ruling this price range at the moment. But, does the BlackBerry DTEK50 has enough to beat the Z2 Plus? Let’s find out as we compare these two based on the spec sheet. Note that we are considering the 32 variant for Lenovo Z2 Plus as it is priced at Rs 19,999.

Design and Display

Starting with the design, BlackBerry DTEK50 comes with an interesting design with rounded corners, flat sides and curved top and bottom. The device feature two front facing speakers as well two back-firing speakers which is very rare in smartphones these days. The ‘retro’ look is completed with a textured back which provides enough grip to hold up and not slip out of your hands easily. Up front, we have a 5.2 inch Full (1920 x 1080) IPS Display with oleophobic coating to prevent smudges and fingerprints. On the right side, what appears to be the power button is actually the ‘Convenience Key’ which can be assigned any function including launching a third party app. The power button ends up on the left therefore which might take some getting used to.

On the other hand, the Lenovo Z2 Plus is a more compact device with glass on both front and back. So the device is quite slippery which is why Lenovo also includes a back cover in the box. On the ride side lies both power button and volume rockers. Regarding the display, the Z2 Plus comes with a 5.0 inch 1080p IPS LCD display with 441 pixel density. The Z2 Plus also sports a capacitive single button with fingerprint scanner. There is no other button (Both on screen or capacitive) so this unique home button can perform several actions.

Processor and Memory

This is where things get clearer. On the inside, things change a lot between these two devices. The BlackBerry DTEK50 is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core Snapdragon 617 paired with Adreno 405 GPU, 3GB RAM for multi-tasking and 16GB of Internal storage which is further expandable up to 2TB via card.

Lenovo Z2 Plus, on the other hand, sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 clocked at 2.15 GHz and Adreno 530 for graphics. For multi-tasking, the device comes with 4GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage which is not expandable.

Both the devices run on 6.0.1 Marshmallow and will be updates to Android 7.0 Nougat in near future. The DTEK on the DTEK50 offers a lot of security options (https://www.themobileindian.com/new-launches/6994_BlackBerry-DTEK50-and-DTEK60-Android-smartphones-launched-in-India). Also, the device comes with BlackBerry Hub which is one stop for all your notifications and comes in really handy almost all the time.

If you are a hardcore user or likes to game a lot then Lenovo Z2 Plus is a clear choice. Although, DTEK50 won’t be that bad but the extra Gig of RAM and Snapdragon 820 on Z2 Plus makes it a clear winner here. If storage and media consumption takes most of your daily usage then DTEK50 will do the job with those 4 speakers and expandable storage.

Camera

The cameras are something which can never be compared on paper. However, we tested the Z2 Plus’s camera so check it out here.

The DTEK50 features a 13-megapixel camera with dual-tone Flash on the back, and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with single LED flash on the front panel. On the other hand, Lenovo Z2 Plus sports a 13 megapixel back camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection and LED flash. On the front, there is an 8 megapixel shooter. So if megapixels are considered, then both the devices are identical but megapixels never tell you the real story so wait for a full review of the DTEK50 in order to compare the actual camera performance of both these devices.

Battery and Connectivity

In the Battery department, DTEK50 trails big time as it features a 2610 battery when compared to the relatively monster 3500 mAh on Z2 Plus which is why the Z2 Plus is much thicker than the DTEK50. Well, we never mind a bit of thickness for that extra battery so good job here Lenovo.

For the connectivity, both devices come with LTE with VoLTE, Wi-Fi (802.11 ac), 4.2 (v4.1 in Lenovo Z2 Plus), GPS, NFC. While the Z2 Plus comes with USB port with Quick-Charge support, BlackBerry DTEK50 comes with a standard micro-USB port for charging and data transferring.

Wrapping Up

Now for the final verdict and based on value for money, the Lenovo Z2 Plus surely wins here with its spiffier specs and bigger battery. Although it’s cameras have been criticized we have not yet compared it against the camera on DTEK50. The Lenovo Z2 Plus will probably thrill no purists with its design and multi-media consumption but we would still recommend you to go with the Z2 Plus at this price range. However, if smartphone security and media-consumption is your priority apart from some basic gaming then BlackBerry DTEK50 is a good choice as well.
