Apple wanted Facebook integration into iOS4

Facebook backtracked believing that the flood of users from the music based social networks would overwhelm its system.

Apple had planned to integrate Facebook into iOS, according to reports.
During the development of iOS4, the two companies were working on Ping talks for about one and half years, which didn’t really turn out well in the end. Ping is a music based social network from Apple, which is available for the users from iTunes.

Facebook integration was there with Ping briefly in 2010, but the feature was removed when Facebook began to believe the flood of users from the music based social networks would overwhelm its system.
The two companies still work together in iPhoto, and other social networking features for iPhone 5. But the prototypes of 4, accessed by a website suggest that Apple planned very wide integration with Facebook, including contact integration and video uploading.

There have been several meetings between the managements of Facebook and Apple, but the issue has not been resolved so far. Facebook may go on to be a part of future iOS updates as it continues to be popular among the users.
It is also believed Apple is probably working on Photo Sream feature in which friends would be able to subscribe to the picture feeds of a friend, and media feed also which would include videos and other files too. Apple seems to be betting big on social, with or without Facebook.
