Apple AirTag (2nd Gen) Now Underway Testing: Report

Apple may be working on the Airtag (2nd Gen) that could come sometime during next year. Here’s what we know about it.

Apple introduced the Airtag back in 2021, and nearly three years after launch, there has been no successor to the tracker device. Now, it seems like Apple finally thinks it’s time to replace it with its successor, and as a result, it is working on developing the Apple Airtag (2nd Gen), according to a new development.

The report that Apple AirTag (2nd Gen) is in the works comes from trusted Apple insider Mark Gurman at Bloomberg. According to Gurman, Apple is developing a next-generation AirTag codenamed B589. The item locator is reportedly being tested by Apple’s manufacturing partners in Asia.

As for what’s changed with the Apple Airtag (2nd Gen) over the first-gen device, Gurman claims that the tracker will be equipped with a better chip and improved location tracking capabilities and that’s about it, for now. If there are more changes in the second-gen product, either they are unknown at the moment, or maybe there aren’t any other than the ones mentioned, which would make it just a minor upgrade.

As for the launch timeframe, Apple plans to introduce the tracker sometime in mid-2025, which is a year away. It would be interesting to see what other changes Apple has planned for the Airtag (2nd Gen) and whether it would be worth upgrading from the first-gen product.

Meanwhile, on the Android side of things, Google recently opened up the Android Find My Devices network where more Android-based trackers are supposed to join it soon. The company, a little while back, also informed users about dedicated trackers based on this network being in works by manufacturers such as eufy, Jio, and more, which will be debuting in the coming months. Samsung also has its own Airtag competitor called Galaxy SmartTag 2 which it debuted last year.
