  • EA also halted development for its Battlefield Mobile title

Apex Legends Mobile, made by Respawn Entertainment and Electronics Arts, is shutting down this May. The reason behind the sunset of the game is that it was falling short of quality, quantity, and cadence. EA says that despite a disappointing offering, it is proud of the game it launched in May of 2022.

“Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity, and cadence. It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game”, said EA in a blog post. The game recently made it to our list of top 5 Android games gaining popularity.

EA shared the news of Apex Legends Mobile shutting down, as a part of its Q3 FY203 earnings results. Players have a 90-day window to enjoy the game as it shuts down on May 1, 2023. “As of 1 PM PST today, January 31st, we will be disabling all real money in purchases in the game as well as removing the game from web stores”, read EA’s blog.

At 4 PM PDT on May 1st, 2023, the game will cease to exist. Apart from this, the developer also said that Respawn and the Apex Legends team remain committed to mobile as a platform and look forward to exploring new opportunities to serve players in the future.

EA also went on to answer some of the questions players might have in mind. It clarified that all of your purchases will remain in your account for you to enjoy until 4 PM PDT on May 1, 2023. Next, it also said that it will not be providing any refunds for real money purchases, per the terms of the EA User Agreement.

In EA’s earnings call, CEO Andrew Wilson said that EA and the development partner chose to sunset this “version” of the game and that the company has “plans to reimagine a connected Apex mobile experience in the future.” Then, Wilson added that mobile will be “a growth vector in the future” for the Apex franchise, reaffirming that the developers haven’t entirely dropped plans to make a mobile oriented game.

Battlefield Mobile development halted

Apart from these updates, the developer further shared that it is halting development on its planned Battlefield mobile game, which it announced in April 2021. “The industry has evolved and our strategy to create a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem has taken shape, we decided to pivot from the current direction to best deliver on our vision for the franchise and to meet the expectations of our players”, EA said.
