Airtel, Reliance Jio war now goes to Apple iPhone 7 arena

The telecos, which are fighting a bitter war to retain customers, are now offering lucrative deals on iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to gain high end customers.

The Airtel-Reliance Jio war is known to all now. Now the two operators, which are fighting a bitter war to retain customers, are now offering lucrative deals on iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to gain high end customers. Both the operators have announced attractive offers on the new iPhones.

Airtel has now come up with a US-telecos’ style rental plan under which you can get iPhone 7 for as low as Rs 19,990. But, there is a catch. You have to then opt for an yearly plan of Airtel.

The cheapest monthly plan is of Rs 1,999 that offers 5GB data plus unlimited calling (local/STD/roaming). A Rs 2,499 plan offers 10GB data plus unlimited calling (local/STD/roaming) and a Rs 2,999 you get 15GB data plus unlimited calling (local/STD/roaming).

Note that if you buy the iPhone 7 under this plan, you cannot port your number or change the plan. For instance, for the 32 iPhone 7, you have to pay Rs 19,990 initially and then you have to opt one of the three plans stated above. And after one year, if you want to opt out, you have to pay Rs 24,000 and you can claim the device else you can upgrade to the next iPhone and keep paying the rental. Note that after the 12 months period, users will be required to visit Airtel stores within 30 days of expiration of that period or else Bajaj Finance (the financier in this model) will auto-debit the concerned Balloon Payment depending on the model. On the other hand, in order to terminate the contract before 12 months, one will need to terminate his Bajaj Finance loan by paying the ballon amount. and carry an NOC to the nearest Airtel store. This offer is only available in Noida and Karnataka right now but Airtel is expected to expand it to other regions soon.

So this Airtel plan is good only for the iPhone lovers who normally have high data usage. Otherwise it may prove costly to you. For instance, the iPhone 7 32 GB model is priced at Rs 60,000. But under the Airtel plan, you may end up paying Rs 70,000 – Rs 19,990 down payment + 26,000 as yearly rental (Rs 1,990 per month) + Rs 24,000 balloon payment at the end of one year.

Reliance Jio, on the other hand, is offering 12 months complementary Jio services on the purchase of any iPhone model. So which means, the offer is not only for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users but also for previous models as well. So an iPhone will be eligible for currently running ‘Free Welcome Offer’ after which all the iPhone users will be migrated to the complementary 12 months offer for just Rs 1,499 in which Jio offers unlimited free local and STD voice calls, 20GB data and unlimited data at night. In addition to this, an iPhone user will also be eligible for 40GB data usage over JioNet Hotpot and free subscription to Jio Apps. Jio claims that the whole offer is worth Rs 18,000

The brighter side is that the brand new iPhones have now got a bit affordable and might save Apple from the criticism that its devices are priced very high. Initially, Flipkart, Tata Cliq and other retailers were offering Rs 10,000 cashback on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as well.

The device is also selling via stores such as iWorld, Croma, Reliance Digital etc if you want to buy it offline.
