Following the heinous Delhi Gang rape case, the Indian government is now working on an innovative wrist watch that can be used by females to alert nearby police stations in case of emergencies.
Union Information and Technology minister Kapil Sibal has unveiled that Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, a unit within the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, which is currently working on the prototype device.
The wrist watch has a key which when pressed would alert the nearest police stations along with the wearer’s relatives about the need of help along with the GPS coordinates for easy tracking of the person. Along with that the watch will also be fitted with a video recording device that would start a 30 minute video recording which can later be used to nab the culprits.
A prototype of the wrist watch is expected to be ready sometime this year following which the idea will be floated among device manufacturers so that devices can be manufactured at a larger scale. The devices however are expected to cost around Rs 500- Rs 1000 which is not a big price to be paid for security.
But looking at the past, especially the Aakash tablet fiasco, it is hard to believe that the Indian government can pull this off. But we certainly are hopeful that things will change this time and some better results will be seen.
